Security is Not Optional

In traditional banking — if someone steals your money, the bank can reverse the transaction and refund you.

In crypto — transactions are irreversible. Once sent, gone forever. No customer service. No chargebacks. No refunds.

This makes security the single most critical skill for any crypto user.

Rule 1 — Never Share Your Private Key or Seed Phrase

This is the most important rule in crypto.

Your seed phrase gives complete access to all your funds. Anyone who has it can drain your wallet instantly.

Legitimate services will NEVER ask for your seed phrase. Ever.

If anyone asks for your seed phrase — it is a scam. 100% of the time.

Rule 2 — Enable Two Factor Authentication (2FA)

2FA adds a second layer of security beyond your password.

Even if someone knows your password — they cannot access your account without the second factor.

Use authenticator apps:

  • Google Authenticator
  • Authy

Avoid SMS 2FA — phone numbers can be hijacked through SIM swapping attacks.

Always enable 2FA on every exchange and wallet you use.

Rule 3 — Recognize Phishing Attacks

Phishing is when scammers create fake websites or emails that look identical to real ones — tricking you into entering your credentials.

How to spot phishing:

  • Check URL carefully — scammers use slight misspellings
  • Real: binance.com
  • Fake: blnance.com or binance-login.com
  • Never click links in emails — go directly to the website
  • Check for HTTPS padlock in browser
  • Bookmark official sites — use bookmarks only

One wrong click can drain your entire wallet.

Rule 4 — Use Strong Unique Passwords

Never reuse passwords across different platforms.

If one exchange gets hacked and your password is exposed — attackers try that same password on every other exchange. This is called credential stuffing.

Use a password manager:

  • Bitwarden — free and open source
  • 1Password
  • LastPass

Generate unique complex passwords for every platform automatically.

Rule 5 — Keep Software Updated

Outdated software contains known security vulnerabilities that hackers actively exploit.

  • Keep your phone operating system updated
  • Keep wallet apps updated
  • Keep browser extensions updated
  • Keep antivirus updated

Rule 6 — Use a Dedicated Device

Serious crypto holders use a dedicated device — a phone or computer used only for crypto. No social media, no random downloads, no browsing.

This dramatically reduces attack surface.

Rule 7 — Verify Before Sending

Crypto transactions are irreversible. Always:

  • Double check the recipient address — character by character
  • Send a small test amount first for large transfers
  • Be aware of clipboard hijacking — malware that replaces copied addresses with attacker addresses

Never copy-paste an address without manually verifying at least first and last 6 characters.

Rule 8 — Be Skeptical of Everything

Common scams to avoid:

  • Giveaway scams — “Send 1 BTC get 2 BTC back” — always fake
  • Celebrity endorsements — almost always fake accounts
  • Guaranteed returns — impossible in any legitimate investment
  • Romance scams — fake relationships leading to crypto requests
  • Fake support — scammers posing as exchange support in Telegram/Discord

If it sounds too good to be true — it is. Always.
