Security is Not Optional

Banks may provide fraud investigation, reversal or reimbursement depending on the payment method, jurisdiction and circumstances. Recovery is not guaranteed.

Confirmed blockchain transfers generally cannot be reversed by the sender. A recipient or custodian may return funds, but there is no general chargeback mechanism or guaranteed recovery.

This makes security the single most critical skill for any crypto user.

Rule 1 β€” Never Share Your Private Key or Seed Phrase

This is the most important rule in crypto.

Your seed phrase gives complete access to all your funds. Anyone who has it can drain your wallet instantly.

Never disclose a recovery phrase to support staff, another person or a website asking you to verify your account.

Legitimate wallet recovery can require entering the phrase locally using the wallet manufacturer’s verified recovery procedure. Verify that procedure independently; unsolicited messages asking for the phrase are a scam warning.

Rule 2 β€” Enable Two Factor Authentication (2FA)

2FA adds a second layer of security beyond your password.

2FA reduces password-only account takeovers, but phishing, stolen sessions, compromised devices and weak recovery methods can still defeat protection. FIDO2/WebAuthn security keys offer phishing-resistant sign-in where supported.

Use authenticator apps:

  • Google Authenticator
  • Authy

Avoid SMS 2FA β€” phone numbers can be hijacked through SIM swapping attacks.

Enable strong authentication on every exchange and custodial account that supports it. Self-custody wallets have different security models; account 2FA does not protect an exposed recovery phrase.

Rule 3 β€” Recognize Phishing Attacks

Phishing is when scammers create fake websites or emails that look identical to real ones β€” tricking you into entering your credentials.

How to spot phishing:

  • Check URL carefully β€” scammers use slight misspellings
  • Real: binance.com
  • Fake: blnance.com or binance-login.com
  • Never click links in emails β€” go directly to the website
  • Check HTTPS and the exact domain β€” an encrypted connection does not prove that a website is legitimate
  • Bookmark official sites β€” use bookmarks only

One wrong click can drain your entire wallet.

Rule 4 β€” Use Strong Unique Passwords

Never reuse passwords across different platforms.

If one exchange gets hacked and your password is exposed β€” attackers try that same password on every other exchange. This is called credential stuffing.

Use a password manager:

  • Bitwarden β€” free and open source
  • 1Password
  • LastPass

Generate unique complex passwords for every platform automatically.

Rule 5 β€” Keep Software Updated

Outdated software contains known security vulnerabilities that hackers actively exploit.

  • Keep your phone operating system updated
  • Keep wallet apps updated
  • Keep browser extensions updated
  • Keep antivirus updated

Rule 6 β€” Use a Dedicated Device

Serious crypto holders use a dedicated device β€” a phone or computer used only for crypto. No social media, no random downloads, no browsing.

This dramatically reduces attack surface.

Rule 7 β€” Verify Before Sending

Crypto transactions are irreversible. Always:

  • Double check the recipient address β€” character by character
  • Send a small test amount first for large transfers
  • Be aware of clipboard hijacking β€” malware that replaces copied addresses with attacker addresses

Verify the full recipient address and network, preferably on the hardware wallet’s trusted display. Checking only the first and last characters can miss address-poisoning attacks.

Rule 8 β€” Be Skeptical of Everything

Common scams to avoid:

  • Giveaway scams β€” “Send 1 BTC get 2 BTC back” β€” always fake
  • Celebrity endorsements β€” almost always fake accounts
  • Guaranteed returns β€” impossible in any legitimate investment
  • Romance scams β€” fake relationships leading to crypto requests
  • Fake support β€” scammers posing as exchange support in Telegram/Discord

If it sounds too good to be true β€” it is. Always.
