Higher Bank Deposit Rates Show Clear Link to Slower Stablecoin Adoption

Research from the Bank for International Settlements suggests that stablecoin growth may face headwinds when traditional banks increase the interest rates they offer on deposits. According to a BIS working paper, a 1 basis point rise in U.S. bank deposit rates correlates with a measurable reduction in stablecoin expansion, demonstrating a direct relationship between conventional banking incentives and digital currency adoption patterns.

The study measured this correlation by analyzing ten-week stablecoin growth rates. When U.S. bank deposit rates increased by 1 basis point, the researchers observed that stablecoin growth during a ten-week period declined from 15 percent to 12 percent. This 3 percentage point drop represents a meaningful slowdown in the pace at which stablecoins were accumulating value and users during that timeframe.

The finding suggests that competitive dynamics between traditional banking products and stablecoins operate at a fundamental economic level. When banks improve returns on deposits through higher interest rates, savers face a clearer choice between holding value in bank accounts versus stablecoin platforms. The research indicates that stablecoin users may redirect capital toward banking products when traditional savings become more attractive from a yield perspective.

This relationship has implications for how stablecoin issuers and platforms price their services and manage user expectations. If deposit rates continue rising, stablecoin platforms may need to offer competitive yields or other value propositions to retain and attract users. The BIS paper provides quantitative evidence that stablecoin adoption is not immune to broader shifts in financial incentives and savings behavior.

For traders and investors in the crypto space, the research highlights a potential vulnerability in stablecoin demand during periods when traditional banks become more competitive on savings rates. Stablecoins serve multiple functions—including trading pairs, yield farming collateral, and value storage—but the research suggests that the basic savings function is sensitive to how attractive traditional banking alternatives become.

The timing of this research is relevant given the recent interest rate environment. Central banks around the world have adjusted rates significantly in response to inflation and other macroeconomic factors, and those changes eventually translate into deposit rate adjustments at commercial banks. The BIS finding suggests that such macroeconomic shifts can influence stablecoin adoption even when crypto markets experience other positive developments.

Understanding this relationship may help traders and investors anticipate shifts in stablecoin activity and capital flows. If deposit rates fall, the correlation suggested by the BIS paper implies that stablecoin growth could accelerate as savings in traditional banks become less attractive. Conversely, if banks increase rates further, the same logic suggests additional pressure on stablecoin adoption rates.

Observers of the stablecoin sector may want to monitor both the macroeconomic environment and how stablecoin platforms respond to increased competitive pressure from traditional banking. The BIS research does not predict that stablecoins will disappear or lose all appeal, but rather identifies a measurable economic factor that influences their growth trajectory. Changes in monetary policy, inflation expectations, and banking competition may therefore deserve attention as potential drivers of stablecoin market dynamics.
